A ZONE EXPERIENCE

Buddy Biancalana's Zone Motion

Have you ever wondered why sometimes you play well and other times you don’t?

As the Royals’ shortstop in the World Series, I played the best baseball of my career. I had a zone experience in which everything slowed down, I wasn’t thinking, and my motion was fluid and effortless, with excellent timing.

Since then, I have been committed to discovering what happened in my mind in that series, and more importantly, teaching athletes and executives how to have that experience regularly versus hoping it occurs by chance. Zone Motion, a science-backed training process was born.

THE SCIENCE

Zone Motion Research & Studies

Like all sciences, sports science has made significant advances over the years. These advances include a more thorough understanding of how an athlete should train to prevent injuries and how to recover quickly from injuries.

At Zone Motion, we have discovered that someone’s thought process can significantly impact injury prevention. This knowledge will advance sports science towards a more comprehensive understanding of the connection between the mind and body.

Seventeen college pitchers participated in Zone Motion training at The American Sports Medicine Institute (ASMI).  The results are as follows:
  • 88% of the pitchers felt less fatigue after the post-test. 12% felt no difference.
  • 71% felt less arm discomfort. 24% felt no difference.
  • 71% felt less shoulder strain. 24% felt no difference.
  • 41% felt less elbow strain. 53% felt no difference.
  • 88% of the pitchers felt more relaxed.
  • 88% felt they were using less effort. 6% felt no difference.
  • 71% felt more balanced. 29% felt no difference.
  • 76% felt the ball come out of their hand better. 18% felt no difference.
  • 94% felt more “locked in.”  6% felt no difference.

Markedly, 76% of the pitchers said they would like to continue using Zone Motion methodology in the future.  18% responded “Probably,” and 6% had no strong opinion.  No participants said “probably not” or “no.”

THE PHYSICS

Access and Development

Zone Motion maximizes access and development by eliminating interference from the front brain. The brain is the operating system of the muscles. When an athlete plays exceptionally well, it starts in the brain. When an athlete fails to perform well, it can also be attributed to mental factors. Failure in the body first begins with an incorrect mental process.

On a deeper level, the quieter the mind, the greater the ability for athletes to experience freedom in their motion.

When competing, athletes need to access their Library of Preparation stored in the middle of the brain. During competition, motion signals must move from the middle to the back of the brain. To develop the library of preparation, which is done in practice, motion signals must move from the back to the middle of the brain. The Zone maximizes access and development by eliminating front-brain interference.
